Wheeling in the big fish – 15 September 2012

14th September 2012 at 2:44 pm

Following on last year’s success, African Pride Irene Country Lodge in Pretoria will once again host the Ramcats Men in Wheelchairs fishing tournament on 15 September 2012.Ramcats, an organisation launched in 2002, is involved in various events regarding the disabled, focusing on people in wheelchairs. Derived from the Afrikaans word “ramkats”, which means an adventurous, brave and sometimes naughty boy, Ramcats assists wheelchair-bound people to enjoy the outdoors in a safe wheelchair-friendly environment.“The celebration of fishing is more than just a sport; it is a wonderful playground where people with differences meet with the resultant effect of feeling good and making a difference. Our members want to be included in society and desire an active outdoor lifestyle,” says Ramcats organiser Gerard Smal.

The inland dam at the lodge is teeming with fish, which due to the excellent habitat have rapidly grown in numbers. The dam has various fish species including Carp, Lowveld Large-scale Yellow fish, Branded Tilapia, Redbreast Tilapia and Mozambique Tilapia. Last year’s winner of this “Catch And Release” event managed to land a whopping 10.5kg Carp.

“This is a great initiative and we are proud to be associated with this tournament which provides these men with an opportunity to share in this wonderful sport while also enjoying the beauty of nature at this magnificent and serene lodge,” says sales and marketing executive for African Pride Hotels Robyn Ward.

Last year the tournament attracted 40 participants and this year 50 fishermen are expected. Participants are from across Gauteng, Northwest and Limpopo.

“This activity brings people together and introduces new beginnings as a therapy to recover and rekindle feelings of wellness” concludes Smal.

Employee of the month gets Micro Light flight

12th September 2012 at 9:40 am

African Pride Irene Country Lodge has started a bit of a tradition where if you have been chosen as the employee of the month, you get a flight in a Micro Light with company director, Adrian van der Byl, so every two months he takes the hardworking staff members up and yesterday was just one of those days. Lesley Benson, HR Administrator and Simangele Ndawonde, Receptionist at African Pride Irene Country Lodge were facing their challenges and did a flight around the Centurion area.

They certainly do not look scared and looks like they really enjoyed it thoroughly.

I am sure the performance at the Lodge has increased to win this.

PROTEA HOTEL UMHLANGA GOES FOR PARALYMPIC GOLD

23rd August 2012 at 5:58 pm

Protea Hotel Umhlanga reservationist Sandra Khumalo is in the Olympic Village in London, preparing to bring home gold.

Sandra won silver at the 2012 Final Paralympic Qualification Rowing Regatta in Belgrade, Serbia, a little earlier this year and believes the medal is within her grasp. She flew out of Johannesburg with the South African Paralympic Team on Tuesday and is now preparing for her first race – the Women’s Single Scull – at 8.30am South Africa time on Friday, Aug 31.

Sandra has always led an active lifestyle, but was in a motor accident in 2005 that left her a paraplegic. As soon as she had her doctor’s permission, she headed straight back to the gym, where she worked on strengthening her upper body. It was there she was introduced to rowing by a fellow gym member, and she took to the sport immediately.

“Out there alone on the water for the first time I felt independent,” Sandra said. “As a paraplegic I have to be dependent on others for help every day, so it was an absolutely thrilling feeling. Rowing makes me feel whole.”

Sandra has been training every day for months for the Paralympics – including the day she flew to London! She had a two-hour session on Germiston Lake on Tuesday morning, then packed her bags, participated in big press conference and got on the plane; a very very busy final day in South Africa.

Arthur Gillis says the whole Protea family will be cheering Sandra on when she races for the first time next Friday. “We are so proud of what she has achieved in difficult circumstances, and we’re behind her 100% of the way. Whether Sandra brings home a medal or not, she’s already a hero to all of us.”

Irene Market voted best weekend market in Jozi

21st August 2012 at 4:30 pm

Joburg’s Choice of Best Weekend Market

You voted for your top weekend markets in Jozi and we set about putting them to the test to see which one stood out above the rest. See if your favourite weekend market was voted Joburg’s Choice of Best Weekend Market!
Who was in the running?

– Neighbourgoods Market

– Irene Village Market
– Jozi Food Market
– Market on Main
– Bryanston Organic & Natural Market

As vetted by our panel the results for Joburg’s Choice of Best Weekend Market are as follows:

3. Irene Village Market:

Located on the shady grounds of the Smuts House Museum, about 40 kilometres north of Johannesburg, the Irene Village Market is a great place for a family outing. Held on the second and last Saturday of every month, the market offers ample guarded parking, safe kids’ entertainment, a tea garden, numerous food stalls and over 300 exhibits with wares ranging from art and craft to clothing, delicacies, antiques, flowers and curio.

2. Neighbourgoods Market:

Neighbourgoods is a super popular Saturday hangout, and for very good reason! The food market serves up delicious fare and you’ll always find something to take home with you in your handbag/pocket. Grab a delicious cocktail or a craft beer and spend the afternoon being chic and stylish on the roof of the market.

1. Market on Main:

Market on Main came out top of the pops with all 3 judges in our panel. We loved the layout of the market and the general vibe is unlike any market in Jozi. There’s just so much to see and do at Market on Main – from the food market (with its mouthwateringly tasty eats), to the art exhibition, to salsa dancing on the roof – you can spend a whole day exploring its every nook and cranny.

We also tried:

Jozi Food Market

Our panel also paid a visit to the Jozi Food Market and we were particularly underwhelmed. The outdoor artisans’ market offers fresh food to customers as an alternative to the canned, preservative filled produce on supermarket shelves. However the market misses the mark when compared to the other ultra-slick operations we visited. It feels thrown together and doesn’t have the same pizzazz as our top 3 contenders.

“At Camdeboo, the customer experience is paramount. Our staff are enrolled in on-going training and recognition programmes. This keeps them abreast with current industry trends, and internal programmes keep staff informed on the individual requirements of our guests,” says Pedro.

The staff and management take guest feedback very seriously, and adjust and upgrade spa offerings in response to guests’ needs and requests. “It is our mandate to not meet, but exceed the expectations of our valued guests,” she says.

Situated in the picturesque valley of Irene, twenty minutes north of Sandton, Camdeboo Spa offers a naturally beautiful, secluded, and harmonious environment in which to escape from the frenetic pace of modern life.

African Pride Irene Country Lodge to host ‘Live Your Purpose’ High Tea

6th August 2012 at 10:20 am

The African Pride Irene Country Lodge will, this Women’s Day, host a “Live Your Purpose” high tea event organised by Mrs South Africa 2012 finalist, Gugu Chama with special guests Thoko Mokgosi-Mwantembe, a successful business woman, Kutana Investment co-founder and former country manger of HP South Africa and Lee Griessel, internationally accredited associated certified Meta coach.

This exclusive event is aimed at celebrating the contributions that women make in the South African society on a daily basis, and at the same time will be a networking and idea sharing platform for the modern day career woman.

In addition, the High Tea, which will take place at one of Centurion’s celebrated icons, which boasts tranquil and exquisite surroundings with a 13-year heritage of providing exceptional modern luxury, will be an opportunity for women to escape their daily hustle and tussle, and get together in a relaxed environment to discuss any current affairs on their minds.

“As women in our society, we are seldom celebrated for our contributions and at the same time, we tend to forget to celebrate ourselves and wait to be acknowledged by others. Events like this one will do a lot to remind us of how much we do as women and what a difference we make,” says Gugu Chama.

“We are delighted to be hosting this event, especially because of the purpose it aims to serve and our location and environment are a perfect setting for women of this calibre,” says Cecilia McKay, marketing manager at African Pride Country Lodge.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the event will be: Making it as a successful business leader; the home-career balancing act and finding and living your purpose. There will also be some spot prizes and give-aways at the event.

Irene Lifts the “River Runs Through It” Cup

By Emile on Tue : 24 July, 2012

River Runs Through It

Last weekend saw the contesting of the annual challenge involving the three clubs that run along the course of theHennopsRiver– Zwartkop, Centurion and Irene. This tournament was the idea of a Centurion member with the view to fostering a friendly spirit between the members of the three clubs, while at the same time giving a broad spectrum of the members an opportunity to play competitive golf. This year was the fourth event after Centurion won the inaugural event and Zwartkop won the next two.

This year Irene Country Club is extremely pleased to announce that Irene finally got our grubby little paws on the coveted trophy and won the event by 1 ½ points from Centurion with Zwartkop in third place. The table below shows how the teams fared against each other. The undoubted stars of the show were the Irene ladies who won 17 out of a possible 24 points!

“We focus a large amount on the actual spas, however there are a number of individuals, as seen by the impressive list of nominees, who go above the call of duty and through their work the entire industry benefits.  The Spa Recognition Awards, are a true reflection of the Spa Industry’s opinion, as individuals are nominated and voted for by the spa industry in their individual categories”, said Dr Nadine de Freitas. These Spa Recognition Awards include four categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award, The Spa Visionary Award and the newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award.

The Spa Ambassador Award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2011 was awarded to Elsa Kruger from Shape Magazine. Elsa Kruger has constantly held the flag high for the spa industry and supported the SA Spa Association on all occassions, including ensuring the continued success of the Spa Index.  Elsa has been fair in her assessment of spas and spa products, ensuring the Shape reader is informed and enthusiastic about their next spa visit. The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2012 humanitarian award was awarded to Donald Perry from Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa. Donald is an innovator and a man to be acknowledged for the ecologically sensitive manner in which he has developed Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa. This eco development uses only eco friendly products, consumes only clean green energy, uses local supplies and building materials, support the local community, and is certainly one Kwa-Zulu Natal’s flagship establishments, from marketing to eco-operations. Recently Donald has also been nominated as Chairman of Richmond Tourism to drive the industry in this area. Creating new areas for tourism and developing sustainable employment in this poverty stricken rural area. The Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2012 was awarded to Renchia Droganis from Africology. Renchia started her career as a life coach and holistic healer. After she trained as a Reiki master and aromatherapist, she incorporated homemade, bespoke skincare products that contain essential oils in her therapies, which were a huge hit with her clients. When a spa approached her to make a body wrap, she took on the challenge and launched Africology, which has grown steadily since its beginnings in 2001. The Africology range is completely chemical-free and can be found in some of the most luxurious spas around the world. Renchia’s four children are also involved in the business, which makes Africology a true family business.

The newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry.  The runner –up was Beverley Reid – Camelot Spa Royal Swazi Spa, Beverley is described by her team as ‘understanding, unselfish and friendly’. She has brought continuous success and increased revenue to the spa, always exceeding expectations; while her proactive and responsible nature ensures the property is run at the highest standards.. And the winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2012 was Ilze Bowen, Spa de la Veille. Committed to professionalism and spa excellence. Ilze leads her team with professionalism, encouragement and support.  She is committed to training, and encourages each staff member, to achieve their fullest potential, in addition to attending all trainings and further spa education courses herself. The spas are run with precision and attention to detail, allowing each client to relax and enjoy their experience without a concern.
We look forward to hosting the Spa Awards in 2013 and Spa Recognition Awards 2013, as South African Spas and individuals continue to flourish in an internationally growing market place.

Natural Suburbia: A Visit to Irene Dairy Farm

Natural Suburbia: A Visit to Irene Dairy Farm.

A Visit to Irene Dairy Farm

Last week we travelled through to Pretoria to visit our doctor with Jenna and on our way back we decided to pop in at Irene Dairy Farm for lunch. We haven’t visited there for a while and I wasn’t even expecting it to be open but what a lovely surprise when we arrived and it was! It’s the most picturesque place! Large rambling farmland and beautiful green fields for their cows. The scenery is really breathtaking.

We had a delicious lunch with mama chickens and their chicks scurrying around everywhere, (both on the tables and off, so sweet!) and then we walked up to see the young calves. As we walked back towards the main buildings all the cows were walking up from the fields, no one was with them, they just seemed to know that it was lunch time, all made their way to the watering hole and then into their cow shed, so wonderful!

They also have a shop there where they sell homemade produce and certified raw milk and cream, I really should have bought more, it was so sweet and delicious! Can’t wait to visit Irene again.

I hope you have had a lovely week.

Obadia & Refiloe Wedding ~ Irene SAX Arena

A wedding is the ultimate celebration and in this case, everyone was invited. Refiloe and Obadia were surrounded by hundreds of guests to share in their wedding day. Refiloe made her preparations at her parents’ home, which was overflowing with excited family members getting ready in every available corner of the house. Needless to say when Refiloe walked down the stairs in her wedding gown the whole bottom story of the house erupted in cries of celebration. We met up with Obadia and his best man at Irene Country Lodge.

The gentlemen were in good spirits and did a great job of striking a pose on the balcony. Refiloe arrived at the church in style in a classic Bentley, which also chauffeured them to Irene Country Lodge where we photographed the couple and their family. The setting was beautiful – autumn colours in the trees and a beautiful sunset over the lake.

So where do you find a reception venue to handle over 500 guests? The SAX Arena in Irene was the perfect solution, and the team at Papilio Designs created the perfect ambiance with cream and white florals and candlelight. Guests were entertained by an amazingly talented all-lady jazz band, the blues with a feminine touch – we loved it. Further entertainment was provided by the best man’s speech who had the couple in stitches of laughter. The couple’s first dance got the party started and everyone who visited the photobooth brought their sense of fun with them. When it was time to throw the bouquet the “single ladies” literally took over the dance floor and enthusiastically expressed that they were ready to “put a ring on it”.

We weren’t surprised to hear that the party carried on into the small hours of the morning. A romantic honeymoon in Europe for Refiloe and Obadia will serve as a well deserved rest after the festivities, we hope you have an amazing trip.

Camdeboo Day Spa is proud to launch the new Camdeboo Forest Spa.

This new venture boasts the same invigorating treatments you can find at Camdeboo Day Spa, but offers its own unique environment and spa experience for day visitors to the Lodge over the weekend. From booking a stork tea or kitchen teafor a group of ladies, to a romantic day for you and your love one the Forest Spa is now able to assist with whatever your requirements are.

Camdeboo (named after the White Stinkwood trees that populate the area) has been open since September 2009 and has become an integral part of the luxury that makes up African Pride Irene Country Lodge. The spa is an oasis of tranquillity that will relax you so thoroughly that you’re likely to forget the world exists outside of its walls.

The Forest Spa, like Camdeboo Day Spa, offers various treatments with a focus on rejuvenation and health. Fittingly for its pure and picturesque setting, the treatment menu uses natural products and top-class therapy methods to bring the peace and calm that one so often loses in daily life, back to its guests.

Situated in the tranquil and largely undisturbed Lodge forest, one of the new forest suites will be your private domain for the duration of your spa session, giving you the space to truly relax.

The Forest Spa experience includes a welcome and complimentary drink at Camdeboo Day Spa, after which your therapist will accompany you on a scenic walk through our Camdeboo forest to your private suite. The suite is available for couples or small groups of friends, offering a private pampering experience in your own slice of luxury.

We welcome all day visitors to reserve a private suite and experience our tranquil Forest Spa. All of Camdeboo’s aqua facilities are available to guests both before and after their spa treatments.
